Oldest collegian flew secret war missions „„ By Julia Evans AT 101-YEARS-OLD, Naylor Hillary will be the oldest collegian at the St Andrew’s centenary this weekend. Like many of the college’s 14,000 previous students, he has had an interesting past. Mr Hillary is one of the last living veterans of the Royal Air Force’s Tempsford 138 Special Duties Squadron, which he was a navigator for in World War 2. THe squadron specialised in dropping resistance fighters and their supplies behind enemy lines in a Mk IV Short Stirling. Its existence was so classified, it wasn’t

even acknowledged until 1989, and the full story has still not come to light. At the end of last year Mr Hillary was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur medal (right) by the French ambassador for his services. He doesn’t talk about it much – life is a lot quieter for him now. He reads the paper each morning, takes long walks and goes to church every Sunday without fail. THere’s an All Blacks jersey hanging on his wall signed by Richie McCaw. Mr Hillary’s grandson organised it for his 100th birthday. He was chuffed, he watches the rugby whenever it’s on. But Mr Hillary said his career really began when he started attending St Andrew’s in 1929. “I had three older sisters so mum and dad packed me off to board at St Andrew’s to toughen me up,â€? he said. We have comprehensive coverage of this weekend’s 100th anniversary of the school, which includes a profile on the college rector Christine Leighton, who has been at St Andrew’s for 10 years now. On the front page, reporter Julia Evans caught up with 101-year-old Naylor Hillary, the college’s oldest old boy going to the festivities. During the war Naylor was part of a secret operation that dropped people and supplies behind enemy lines in France to help the Resistance. Naylor was a navigator on those missions, a critical part of the jigsaw. Pinpoint accuracy was needed to get the people to the right spot and away from the Germans. Liquor store opposition mounts By Milly Smith AN APPLICATION for an off-licence bottle store in a Riccarton building shared by Work and Income New Zealand has attracted 11 public objections and a petition with 15 signatories. P M Liquors Ltd applied last year for an off-licence liquor store at 76 Riccarton Rd, in the same building that houses one of WINZ’s service centres. The Ministry of Social Development is remaining “neutral” over the application which will be heard by the District Licensing Committee on Thursday. A ministry spokeswoman declined to comment on the proposal “as providing a comment may be viewed as suggesting beneficiaries are more likely to have a problem with alcohol than anyone else in the community”. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch Boys’ High School and the Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock Residents Association are among those who have opposed the application. In Brief BID TO ADDRESS ISSUES Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton will make a notice of motion at its meeting tomorrow to address a number of ongoing issues in the central Riccarton area. Issues include providing a swing and slide for younger children at the Picton Avenue Reserve, ongoing anti-social behaviour in the area around the Riccarton bus exchanges and concerns around the timing and location of the mobile library service. NEW COMMUNITY GROUP The Halswell Community Project is planning to facilitate a new group to represent the community on issues in the area. The Halswell Liaison Group is to develop community networks and share information and ideas. Oldest collegian flew secret war missions
•From page 1 Mr Hillary was born and raised in Christchurch. He lived in Opawa before being going to St Andrew’s. He played rugby and tennis, but it was an affinity for mathematics that Mr Hillary said he took from his time at St Andrew’s. “Because I was interested in mathematics, when I had a chance with the air force, I went on as a navigator. You were calculating all the time,” he said He said he doesn’t think he was a very bright student. Mr Hillary was 18 when he left St Andrew’s to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force and go on to take part in the Royal Air Force Tempsford squadron. “I have very pleasant memories of my time there,” he said. Even beyond his working life, Mr Hillary has had a special connection with his old school. His son David attended the college in the 60s and three grandsons, Gareth, Rhys and James Bissland after that – even now his six-year-old great grandson, Henry, is one of the college’s youngest pupils. Together they will be cutting the anniversary cake at the

founder’s day assembly on Friday. It’s very special going back to the school with a great grandson for a fourth generation, Mr Hillary said. Even Mr Hillary’s daughter Pam Bissland worked on the committee for the 75th anniversary and said if it were open to girls then she would’ve gone to St Andrew’s as well. Our family has a special connection to the school, it’s an important part of my life, Mr Hillary said.

Time capsule won’t be opened until bicentenary ST ANDREW’S College students have buried a time capsule to mark the school’s centenary. Last week, a preparatory class from the college had the privilege of burying the capsule on the school’s grounds. It is to be opened in 100 years. It has been specially crafted
so it won’t rot in the ground and has been sealed from the inside so the content cannot decay. Among the items inside was a note from the current rector, Christine Leighton, addressed to the rector of St Andrew’s College in 2117. •Our People with Christine Leighton, pages 6-7

Christine Leighton Our People St Andrew’s first female rector Christine Leighton is rector of St Andrew’s College, which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary this weekend. She talks to Julia Evans about the importance of the school’s community and how it plans to mark its centenary So, beginning with a bit of background, how did you come to be rector at St Andrew’s? I’ve been working in education in New Zealand for 37 years and I’ve had a wide-ranging experience through New Zealand schools. I’ve taught at state and integrated schools, single sex and co-educational schools, but this is my first time working at an independent school in New Zealand. I’ve come to my 10th year as rector at St Andrew’s, but before this, I was principal of St Hilda’s Collegiate School in Dunedin for nine years. It’s hard to believe 10 years have gone. Obviously, I’ve been rector through some interesting times but I’ve absolutely loved it. What is it about St Andrew’s that drew you in? Did you think it would be a new challenge in your career? I was attracted back to St Andrew’s largely because it is a co-educational college. I’d been educated in a co-educational school myself and I believe that it’s the best way to prepare young people for their futures. It’s also a natural environment for students to be in, so I was delighted to come back. Christchurch seemed like a nice place to come to and St Andrew’s has a great reputation. I was also attracted to the idea of independent education, where you have more resource available to you and more opportunity to do things a bit differently. I was an english teacher before I moved into leadership positions and I had taught at an
look back on it, I’m sure I will have a sense of satisfaction, but at the moment, I never stop. The world changes rapidly, circumstances change rapidly – it’s the kind of job where you don’t get too much time to stop and feel that sense of satisfaction, you’ve just got to keep going since you’re always focusing on the next thing. Every year is different, every year there are new contexts that you’re working in, and every year we have about 250 new students come into the college so it’s always changing. As St Andrew’s first female rector, did you celebrate International Women’s Day last week? I’m the 10th rector to be here, but the first woman to be rector. That’s quite an achievement really. How important do you think St Andrew’s is to the wider Christchurch community? We are a big community. We’ve got 1450 students and 13,000 old collegians, so it’s a huge community, but we work really hard at not being inward looking. involved in more college history That was the dedication service of the first year of St Andrew’s so that is the day that every year we celebrate our founder’s day on. We’ve planned a whole weekend of events that will engage all of our college and the wider community. We have present students coming and that’s from preschool to year 13, we have recent collegians who have left in the last five or six years right up to those who were here in the 1930s also coming. Several people in their 90s are coming back and the oldest collegian that we know of, who is 101, will be cutting the cake at the founder’s day assembly. We have parents that want to come to events and old collegians of all various ages – some coming from as far away as England for the weekend. What’s on the itinerary for the weekend? On Friday, we’re having a college tour for 700 guests who are also coming to the founder’s day assembly. Then in the afternoon, we’re holding our own highland games and a cocktail evening for 1200 collegians at the college. On Saturday, we have a whole college fete, which is a huge event and all the students are involved in it. We’ve got displays, stalls, races, rides and entertainment – all the

music and cultural groups are performing on that day as well. Later on Saturday, there’s a gala dinner at Horncastle Arena for 1500 people, which is the largest sit down dinner in Christchurch since 2009. Then on Sunday, we’re having a chapel service,
cricket game and old collegians concert in the college hall and, on Monday, there will be a big sense of relief and achievement. That’s a busy weekend, what do you want people to take out of it? One of the things we wanted

to do was tell our stories and we know the best way to do that is visually. We’ve created a timeline of 100 years of history and that is absolutely fantastic for everyone to engage with. We’ve got a centennial book and a centennial movie, which is 15 minutes long, so we’ll launch that as part of our weekend and have viewings. I’m seeing the preview today, which is very exciting. In our gymnasium, we’re launching 100 years of sport, where we’re celebrating more than 80 collegians, staff and present students who have played or been in the top of their sport. They had to have been either in the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games or the world championships. Then we’ve also had a centennial orchestral piece written by an old collegian, which is 11 minutes long, has our college song incorporated and tells our story through the music. Then, a preparatory class has created a time capsule, which was buried yesterday. It has been hermetically sealed in a
specially-made box to preserve it for the next 100 years. So you what do you think the next 100 years has in store for St Andrew’s? The centenary is about looking back and being grateful for what we have been given. We’re celebrating 100 years and where we’ve got to now from our very humble beginnings to the extent which we’ve been able to develop. We want to show gratitude for the legacy we’ve inherited from the people that have come before us. But the theme is what our legacy is moving forward, and what we now have to contribute to ensure the people of the future are going to have the same opportunities we’ve enjoyed. I have had the thought that maybe there will be a five-year-old here at the moment who will still be alive for the 200th anniversary. There must be something special about the college’s community if people are coming from near and far to celebrate? There’s something very humbling about being part of this community and the opportunity to see and understand the impact education has had on people’s lives. There’s the sense that these people are reconnecting because they want to say thank you and show some gratitude and that’s wonderful. Often that comes with maturity and at a later stage in your life. But the thing I love to see is that a lot of our old collegians, who are only just out of school, have that same feeling. I think that’s quite strange and unusual for young people to want to come back. We’ve got an unbelievable number of recently left old collegians coming back for this weekend and that makes me feel really happy. I think that has to reflect the gratitude they have to have come here in the first place, because students do realise how fortunate they are to be here. But to me, it reflects the amazing time that they had when they came here so they just want to reconnect.

Last week I talked about my frustration at the number of people still burning rubbish and vegetation in ultra-dry conditions. So what happens? It rains and then instantly turns cold enough to say summer’s over, welcome to winter. And people start lighting their fireplaces, causing more calls, in one case from a disgruntled neighbour, and in another from the house where the fire had been lit because the smoke wasn’t exiting up the chimney, but was filling the home up instead. So in what seems an unusually early cold season, the recommendation is to get your chimney flue swept – now. Smoky chimneys are one thing, but just about every year at the onset of winter we have house fires caused by fireplaces that have sat unused for six months. While we are at it, this is also certainly the time to have electric blankets checked and certified. There are a couple of appliance firms that provide this service quite cheaply. For peace of mind, it’s a strong recommendation from us that everyone should have the blanket checked annually.

Sick bed to City2Surf By Gabrielle Stuart JUST A year ago, Leanne Crawford could barely walk, had lost 30kg, was constantly sick, and had to put both her work and her wedding on hold – and she had no idea what was going wrong. This month, she will take on the 14km The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event, which she will walk, and she won’t be doing it alone. Her partner, friends and many of the nurses who helped her get on her feet again plan to do the walk beside her – 41 people in total – raising money to help others with the same condition get treatment. The 30-year-old began feeling sick in 2014, but initially doctors did not know what was wrong. It took almost two years for her to be diagnosed and find a treatment, because she was facing a complex mix of parasites in her intestines, crohn’s disease and endometriosis. For much of that time she couldn’t work, and she had to postpone her wedding three times. “It was like my life was turned upside down. It was really, really frightening just not knowing what was going on,” she said. Funding sought to fight planned funeral home
But she said it was only possible because of the help she received, and the diagnosis tools provided by the Canterbury Bowel and Liver Trust. “The things that finally got me well cost a lot of money, so I wanted to give something back,” she said. She has already raised almost $1500 through people sponsoring her run. She said she had never done anything like the City2Surf before, and after being sick for so long being able to cross the finish line would feel like a giant victory. “I’m sure there will be tears,” she said. “I finally feel like I’ve got my life back. I can’t go for drinks or dinner like normal, but I am still able to work, which is amazing.” She works for Bupa as an activity organiser, and said they held her job for her, in spite of the fact she was off work for three months. By Bridget Rutherford THE GROUP fighting against the establishment of a funeral home in Halswell is asking for more than $4000 to help fund the battle. Lamb and Hayward has lodged a resource consent application to build a new funeral home on the corner of Halswell Junction and Wigram Rds. But nearby residents say it would cause traffic congestion, degrading of property values and was culturally inappropriate for some people living nearby. Birchgate Lane, Knights Stream and Longhurst residents have applied for a $4198 grant from the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board to fight the proposal. The money would be used to get technical support to assist their preparation of evidence on the traffic impacts the facility would have. The group has already raised $16,000 to pay for legal fees to fight the resource consent application.

Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community. This is a time for celebration. Our school’s values of Commitment, Achievement, Resilience and Respect are on show as we celebrate the achievements of our fantastic students, and celebrate is exactly what we have been doing. This year we held a special Academic Awards assembly at which we acknowledged the 2016 achievements of our students. And in another innovative step, we streamed the assembly live on our Facebook page (where it is still available for you to view) complete with guest speaker Mr Ben Lucas, New Zealand Paralympian and Chef de Mission of the 2016 Rio Paralympics. What a celebration it was, and rightly so because there are many great achievements to celebrate. In doing so not only do we celebrate our value of Achievement, but also the Commitment, Resilience and Respect for self and others that all of our students need to develop if they are to find success. We are a values-driven school, strong and successful in building and maintaining relationships because strong positive relationships are essential to a healthy community, and strong positive relationships are essential for learning. As a school we seek to get better and better at celebrating our differences, at respecting each other for the wonderful things that we all have to offer. Diversity is strength. Embracing and celebrating diversity make for a more positive and productive world and it improves our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Celebrating our diversity also allows us each to see things differently and therefore to be able to re-imagine things differently. That’s creativity – the ability to see the same things in life but dream up different solutions, different ways of doing things. The opportunities available for our students grow almost daily, whether they are sporting or recreation, academic or cultural, in or out of class. The richness and diversity of life at Hornby High School is clear to see on our school Facebook page, so please make a point of liking our page so that you can connect more easily with all of the wonderful things that our tamariki are engaged in. Of particular note was the two days last week when we hosted Mr John Parsons, renowned cyber-safety and child safety expert, within the Uru Manuka cluster. John worked with children from across the cluster, highlighting some of the dangers of the internet, and some practical tips on keeping ourselves safe. He also worked with staff, and whanau and community members who came to the free workshop on Wednesday evening. John’s message is powerful, and in a single session he proved capable of taking you from laughter to tears, from fear to confidence. After the whanau evening one parent commented, “Oh my God, I had no idea he was so good. Every parent should hear this”. We plan to bring John back next year. Special thanks to the Hornby Working Men’s Club which hosted the whanau session on the Wednesday evening. And in the middle of all of this we are almost ready to start our rebuild, with the successful contractor expected to be announced in the next week or two. Demolition is likely to start by the end of the month. Finally, there is a lot happening in our classrooms as we make changes to offer our children the 21st century education they need and deserve. The celebration was to welcome the First Foundation Scholarship recipients and farewell graduating students. Ellison’s scholarship which will provide her with support for the next four years and includes paid, part-time work experience and financial help with tertiary fees. She will also be supported by a personal mentor and engage in an extensive student support and development programme.

St Thomas’ rower wins sculls title SPORTS By Gordon Findlater ST THOMAS of Canterbury College’s Logan Anderson won the under-17 single sculls title at the South Island secondary school championships by the slimmest of margins. Anderson, 16, won gold in a time of 7min 37.70secs, just seven hundredths of a second ahead of Roncalli College’s Jack Gibbson at Twizel’s Lake Ruataniwha on Sunday. He then went to complete a medal trifecta in Twizel. Anderson and St Thomas crewmate Lachlan Sydney won silver in the under-17 double sculls. They ended up in another tight tussle with Roncalli. However it was the South Canterbury pairing of Gibbs and Sam Anderson that took the spoils on this occasion, winning by just over a second. Then Logan Anderson was part of the quad with Jack Hurley, Ben Scarlett, Ethan Bargh and Ben Wright (cox), who won the under-17 coxed quad sculls. St Andrew’s College retained the Bell Cup for most overall points at the championships. They took out the much anticipated boys’ under-18 coxed eight in dominant fashion. St Andrew’s powered to gold more than six seconds clear of defending Maadi Cup champions Christ’s College in second, and Christchurch Boys’ High School in third.

Even more remarkable was that the St Andrew’s crew broke the sixminute mark with a time of 5min 58.29sec. If the boys’ race was clear cut, the girls’ under-18 coxed eight was quite the opposite. Little more than a second was all that separated gold from bronze. Gold went to Rangi Ruru Girls’ School with a time of 6min 51.08sec, with Christchurch Girls’ High School just a bow ball behind in 6min 51.52sec, and St Margaret’s College taking bronze with 7min 0.93sec. Rangi Ruru had the second largest medal haul at the weekend – the most of any girls’ school – winning eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Schools will now turn their attention to the Maadi Cup, which takes place from March 27 to April 2. Results: St Andrew’s: eight gold, three silver, one bronze. Rangi Ruru: eight gold, one silver, two bronze. CBHS: four gold, five silver, three bronze. Villa Maria: one gold, four silver, one bronze. St Margaret’s: one gold, three silver, three bronze. Rise in number of motorists running red lights By Gabrielle Stuart CHRISTCHURCH’S growing red light-running problem is leaving dozens of injuries in its wake. In the past year, there were 65 crashes which left people injured after drivers ran red lights, up from 42 the year before. At the city’s top 10 worst intersections this month, almost 5400 drivers ran red lights in a single day. That was up 31 per cent from last year, and 64 per cent more than in 2014. They do not include people turning right across an intersection on a red light. The worst for red light-runners was the intersection of Blenheim Rd and Mandeville St, where 652 were detected on a single day on Thursday, December 1. Police figures have also grown. In the last year, 1491 people were ticketed for running red lights in Christchurch, up from

Burnside win Mainland title, aim to spike at nationals By Gordon Findlater BURNSIDE HIGH School continued their winning ways last week as they build towards three straight national titles at the New Zealand secondary schools volleyball championships. The Burnside girls’ team took out the Mainland secondary schools’ division 1 title last week after defeating Waimea College 3-0 in the final. Riccarton High School and Waimea College finished as beaten semi-finalists tied for third. Burnside can book their spot in the top 32 at the New Zealand secondary schools championships later this month in Palmerston North with a topthree finish at this weekend’s Canterbury secondary school championships. The top three boys and girls’ teams will book a spot in the top 32 in Palmerston North. Burnside will be back at full strength for the tournament after being without coach Sam Ryburn and key players, Chloe Mikaera and Libby Collet, who have been with the New Zealand team at the Asian girls’ under-18 volleyball championship in China. Ensuring a safe work place Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. • Buses will be running from McCormacks Bay to both start locations. The first 14km bus will leave at 7.15am, and the last at 8.15am. The first Sport Canterbury 6km bus will depart at 8.30am, and the last at 9.15am. The Sport Canterbury bus drop off point is 800m from Hansens Park.

• Buses will operate from the finish line back to the start lines between 10am – 2pm. • A free shuttle will operate from Ferrymead Playing Fields (finish area) back to McCormacks Bay if you parked there. • Need to buy a bus ticket on the day? There will be limited sales – we recommend you plan ahead and book online: City2surf.co.nz.
